About
I walk. I walk a lot. I walk to and from Halifax and Dartmouth. It’s that kind of city. I moved to Halifax four years ago and since then have made my way around the city mostly on my feet. During my walks I collect discarded palm-size objects from the ground around my feet. These objects are mostly found on the edge of the sidewalk or gutter and are the residue or rubbish lost, discarded, or left behind by pedestrians and motorists. They are worn, scratched, broken, flattened and faded; yet for me they represent traces or mementos of presence, space and place. They mark a point where others have been, were going, and are now gone.
My habit and interest in walking stems from my desire for chance, coincidence, personal histories, as well as for the strange and unfamiliar. It is a way of understanding urban space as more than a construction of static streets and buildings, but as an area in which there are tides and currents of human activity and interest. These objects define a space and place where citizens move and the rubbish they leave behind become testimonials of life within the city. Selections of objects collected from my walks were used as the mainframe for building a metafiction located in Halifax and Dartmouth and revolve around some historical events and some fictional events.
